Super Six Spinach Smoothie – A Tasty Green Smoothie That Doesn’t Suck
As a kid, I always had a difficult time eating my serving of vegetables during meal times. My mom used to always tell me that if I didn’t finish my veggies, I couldn’t have dessert. So naturally, I found ways to scarf down my vegetables as quickly and painlessly as possible. As an adult, green vegetables still aren’t at the top of my list but thanks to this tasty smoothie recipe, I actually look forward to having them! There are many green smoothie recipes online and in cookbooks that aren’t exactly the most appetizing but we promise you’ll enjoy this one.
Forget About Bitter Tasting Smoothies
One of the biggest reasons why many people don’t enjoy green smoothies is because of the bland, bitter taste. When it comes to making green smoothies taste good, it’s important to choose your ingredients carefully. A popular green smoothie is spinach and kale. Yes, it’s very healthy for you but two bitter ingredients will always equal one bitter smoothie. The trick is to not use all veggies in your recipe. Sometimes, throwing in a single fruit can make a world of a difference in terms of taste.
The carefully selected ingredients for this smoothie will usually not be seen in a typical green smoothie. Not only do these ingredients provide you with numerous health benefits, but they also give your smoothie a refreshing new taste.
All About Matcha Green Tea
This first ingredient has been a staple ingredient in Japanese cuisine for centuries. Of course, we’re talking about matcha. It’s safe to say that most of us have tried green tea. Matcha is made from the finest Japanese tea leaves that have been de-veined and ground into a powder. Matcha has an umami flavor. In culinary, umami is the fifth flavor that has a combined hint of sweet, sour, salty, and a slight bitter taste. Matcha is excellent at detoxifying the body, helping to improve mood, and is packed with antioxidants that will boost the immune system. Finding matcha powder in an ordinary grocery store can be difficult which is why your best bet is to go to an Asian supermarket.
The second unique ingredient is one that you may not have heard of before. Spirulina is a certain type of algae that can be found in freshwater sources including lakes, ponds, and rivers. On its own, spirulina has an intense earthy taste. It does a great job at balancing the sweetness of some dishes but what’s most impressive about spirulina is the health benefits. The nutrients found in spirulina can help protect you from serious illnesses such as cancer and heart disease, will help boost energy levels, and can speed up weight loss. Now that’s what I call a superfood!
As said earlier, we promise that you’re going to enjoy this green smoothie. If the matcha and spirulina don’t sound like they combine into something delicious, it’s because we haven’t added in the last two ingredients yet. Believe it or not, a large ripe banana together with unsweetened almond milk will combine marvelously with the flavors of the matcha, spirulina powder, spinach and kale. It’s a surprising combination of flavors that has just the right amount of sweetness, savoriness, and a mild earthy flavor that you’ll love.
This smoothie recipe is extremely easy to make once you have all your ingredients. Combine ½ teaspoons of spirulina powder, ½ teaspoon of matcha, ¼ cup of frozen spinach, ½ cup of frozen kale, 1 cup of unsweetened almond milk, and 1 large ripe banana in a blender. You can also add ½ cup of ice if you prefer your smoothies made that way. Blend all the ingredients until they are smooth and enjoy. This recipe takes just 5 minutes to prepare which is perfect for individuals with a hectic schedule but need a quick, healthy boost.
If you or your children are anything like me, eating my vegetables was always a challenge. Thanks to this awesome green smoothie, that could be a thing of the past. Just don’t forget to add your fruit in, and you should be good to go!
