So Green & Refreshing

When making a good green smoothie recipe, the choice of ingredients definitely matters. If you want your smoothie to taste like more than just a green plant, then you’re going to have to use some tasty options. Watermelon is a perfect option to start this recipe off with as it’s full of flavor and thanks to its high water content, it makes this smoothie super refreshing as well. Watermelons are also a great source of the antioxidant lycopene, which helps to prevent the oxidative stress caused by harmful free radicals. Lycopene also helps to prevent certain ailments, like cancer, heart disease, and stroke. (1)

Along with the watermelon, you’re also going to add your choice of ½ cup of either fresh or frozen peach chunks. Using peaches with this recipe works perfectly and they really help to add even more of a delightful taste that balances out the taste of kale. Peaches are also great to use when making smoothies because of their high vitamin C and zinc content, which helps to give your immune system a nice boost. (2)

When making green smoothies, I usually swap between using spinach or kale as my green of choice. This particular recipe is no exception as you’ll need to add one cup of fresh kale (or you can optionally use ¼ cup of frozen kale). Kale is a great source of essential vitamins, minerals, dietary fiber, antioxidants, and it’s fantastic for making both smoothies and fresh juices. In fact, several studies have actually found that drinking kale juice on a regular basis helps to significantly lower coronary artery disease risk factors. (3)

To round out the flavor of this green recipe, you’ll also be adding in a bit of lemon juice and fresh ginger. Not only do both of these ingredients help to give the smoothie a more distinct flavor, but they each also offer some great health benefits as well. Lemon consumption has been linked with decreased blood pressure (4) while ginger is packed full of beneficial antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. After adding your lemon juice and ginger, simply mix in ½ cup of water and some ice and you’ll be all set to blend everything together until it’s nice and smooth. Enjoy!
