Must-try Spinach Strawberry Detox Smoothie
When it comes to doing a detox, there are definitely some food groups that are more beneficial than others. I try to keep things as simple as possible when making detox smoothie recipes by using just a handful of whole food ingredients that have proven benefits when it comes to detox. This must-try spinach strawberry detox smoothie is made with that in mind. Ingredients like spinach, strawberries, and bananas are all rich sources of antioxidants that blend perfectly with other great additions like pomegranate seeds and flaxseed meal. The end result is a delicious tasting smoothie that works wonders when it comes to helping you detox your system in an all natural and healthy way.
Eat More Plant-Based Foods to Increase Your Antioxidant Intake
Every day, we’re exposed to all sorts of substances that can cause free radical damage in the body. These include radiation, harmful chemicals, certain foods or food-like products, and many more. Even breathing the air in your own home may contain toxins that produce free radicals. To help protect your cells against free radical damage, increase your intake of antioxidants such as flavonoids, lignans, tannins, vitamins C and E, and phenols found in many of your favorite plant-based foods. These include fruits, vegetables, nuts, seeds, whole grains, and more. What better way to include these in your diet than with a convenient smoothie?
A Great Tasting Blast of Antioxidants
This smoothie is filled with antioxidants thanks to all of the great nutrient-dense ingredients we’ll be using. We have fresh spinach and a mix of frozen strawberries and banana for that tasty base that will also help to provide the antioxidant benefits we outline above. They also offer a ton of essential vitamins, minerals and dietary fiber without the excess calories. I’m sure you’re already aware that leafy greens like spinach are incredibly healthy, but berries are no slouch in that department either. In fact, berries provide an extremely potent amount of antioxidant and anticancer properties. (1) Additionally, bananas are another surprisingly good source of antioxidant activity, on top of all of their other great health benefits.
Pomegranate seeds are another incredibly nutritious ingredient that you’ll be adding into this recipe. I was honestly blown away at how much even just the seeds of a pomegranate can offer — they’re packed full of vitamin C and fiber along with some rather amazing antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and anticancer properties. (2)
Another great detox addition to this recipe is the tablespoon of flaxseed meal. If you’re not a fan of seafood, then flaxseed is easily the best source of heart healthy omega-3 fatty acids that you’ll have available to you. The high omega-3 content of flaxseed make it a great choice when it comes to helping to protect against cardiovascular disease and stroke, as it helps to lower both cholesterol and blood pressure. (3) Flaxseed is also rich in antioxidants and fiber, so it fits in perfectly with all of the other great ingredients on offer in this recipe.
To finish the smoothie off, you’ll simply need to add ½ cup of water and either ½ or one cup of ice. You can also optionally add in a bit of lemon juice if you’d like to add even more great detox health benefits, as lemons are known to assist your liver with its natural detoxification process.
