A Glassful of Nutrients
The greens we’ll be using for this recipe is Swiss chard. Swiss chard is without a doubt one of the world’s healthiest foods because it’s one of the most nutrient-dense vegetables there is. It contains many antioxidants including beta-carotene and lutein, flavonoids, and betalains. According to studies, these nutrients possess cancer-fighting properties and can also ward off inflammatory illnesses. (1) Swiss chard is also packed with a high amount of vitamins and minerals to protect your immune system.
Swiss chard can be very difficult to find in a commercial supermarket. In fact, specialty supermarkets sometimes only have Swiss chard available when it’s in season. What many people do is to grow Swiss chard in their garden. The seeds are cheap and it’s a relatively easy crop to grow since they do well in both warm and cool climates. For best results, make sure to use organic soil and organic fertilizer. Additionally, avoid using pesticides to ensure your Swiss chard is free from unwanted chemicals.
Many smoothies use milk or water in order to add volume to the beverage but this recipe makes use of unsweetened coconut water. For every cup of coconut water, there’s approximately 600 mg of potassium. This makes it ideal for ensuring an individual is properly hydrated. In fact, coconut water is better at replacing electrolytes than most sports drinks! Coconut water has a strong, sweet flavor that pairs well with most sweet-tasting fruits like the ripe peaches and frozen mango which are included in this recipe.
Last but not least, we can’t forget about the creamy avocado. Avocado gives this recipe it’s rich, creamy taste that binds the rest of the ingredients into one delicious smoothie. Avocados are filled with healthy fats, specifically monounsaturated fats, which helps to improve our cardiovascular health.
If you have a hectic schedule, this smoothie recipe is perfect for you. It only takes 5 minutes to prepare and the directions are extremely easy to follow. Combine 1 cup of chopped Swiss chard, 1 cup of frozen chopped peaches, ½ cup of frozen mango chunks, ¼ cup of peeled and chopped avocado, 1 teaspoon of grated fresh ginger, 2 teaspoons of lime juice, and 1 cup of unsweetened coconut water in a blender.
