By Emma

More often than not, people have a love-hate relationship with green smoothies. We know that they’re packed with essential nutrients that keep our minds and bodies healthy but some just can’t get past the bland, boring and leafy taste. What if I told you that green smoothies don’t always have to taste that way? What if I told you that green smoothies can actually have a refreshing, tropical flavor?

The sweet and tart flavors of this fantastic smoothie will help mask the taste of the greens which makes it perfect for children who have a hard time eating their vegetables. It’s great for adults who hate vegetables too. Relaxing on the beach or lounging by the pool wouldn’t be complete without sipping on this tropical, tart and refreshing smoothie!

Fresh vs. Frozen Produce

The green vegetable that you’ll be using for this smoothie is spinach. You have the option to use fresh spinach or frozen spinach which is found in all grocery stores. Now you might be wondering, “Is frozen spinach better than fresh spinach and vise versa?” The answer may actually surprise you.

It’s easy to say that fresher is always better since it’s less processed but this simply isn’t the case for many fruits and vegetables including spinach. Freshly picked spinach may have a high vitamin C content but it slowly loses it over a span of just 4 days when it’s stored at room temperature. On the other hand, spinach that goes through a freezing process shortly after it has been picked from the ground retains more of its vitamin C content as well as other nutrients. (1)

If you’re on a budget, you should also consider purchasing frozen fruits and vegetables rather than fresh fruits and vegetables. Those who eat produce often know that spoilage is a big issue and it’s practically like throwing money away in the trash bin. Buying frozen produce will ensure that you always have access to them whenever you feel like making certain smoothies or dishes. There’s no need to worry about spoilage as long as they’re stored properly in the freezer. Additionally, buying fresh fruits and veggies can actually cost more than buying frozen.

Tropical Flavor

You’re going to absolutely love the flavors of this smoothie. The taste of the spinach will easily be masked by the sweetness of the pineapple and mango chunks, the citrus flavor of freshly squeezed orange juice, and the mild flavor of ground turmeric which is perfectly balanced with the sweetness of raw, organic honey.

Don’t worry, those who have a hectic schedule will be pleased to find out that this recipe can be made in as little as 5 minutes. In a blender, combine 1 cup of freshly squeezed orange juice, ¼ a cup of frozen spinach or 1 cup of fresh spinach, ½ a cup of chopped pineapple, ½ a cup of frozen bits of mango, 1/8 a teaspoon of ground turmeric, and 1 ½ teaspoons of honey. If the sweetness isn’t enough, you can always add more honey. Blend the ingredients until the mixture is free from any chunks of fruits or vegetables. Serve your smoothie immediately and enjoy!

Smoothie lovers better bookmark this recipe because we know you’re going to be hooked from the very first sip. It’s the perfect green smoothie for hot summer days and more importantly, it has a healthy serving of spinach that even kids will enjoy!
