Blueberry Banana Blast Smoothie (Paleo-Friendly Recipe)

By Emma

I’ve never used blueberries in a smoothie recipe and not loved the final results. They make great smoothie ingredients, and they’re so good for you it’s scary. Berries are one of the healthiest foods you can eat, in fact, they’re an excellent source of antioxidants and studies have even found that they help reduce stress. Berries, like banana, are also a good source of fiber. This keeps you feeling fuller for longer and can be the difference between cheating on a diet by eating something quick and easy, or not. I suggest buying frozen blueberries in bulk, and then portioning them out so that you can use a few whenever you need to. For this recipe, you’ll also need to grab some frozen banana out of the freezer. The longer they’re in there, the better, you want the texture that the frozen banana provides.

No Blues Just Blueberries

There are two types of healthy seeds used in this smoothie recipe. Chia seeds are one of the most nutritious foods out there and make for excellent smoothie companions. Hemp seeds are an excellent source of omega-3 fatty acids, rich in antioxidants, and they provide fiber, iron, and calcium to the body. They’ve also been shown to help weight loss in type 2 diabetics (1).

Leave some chia seeds in a glass of water for 15 minutes until they’re ready to be added to the blender full of blueberries and banana. Next, you’ll want to add some flaxseed to the blender. Flaxseed is widely considered to be a superfood, but with no new age marketing spin. There’s evidence that flaxseed may, in fact, help reduce your risk of heart disease, cancer, stroke, and diabetes (2).

This breakfast delight delivers massively with tremendous flavor. It’s also straightforward to prepare and can slot right into any smoothie making morning. Once you’ve sliced and diced all of the ingredients; banana, blueberries, hemp seeds, flaxseeds, fresh dates, and a dash of cinnamon, throw them into a blender with some ice and unsweetened almond milk to blend. Almond milk is an excellent source of protein for those of you who are rightfully wary of dairy products. Almond milk is 50% lower in calories than cow’s milk, which also makes it an excellent choice for people trying to lose weight. Don’t be shy to add in any other soy or nut milk alternative to this recipe if almond milk is not your favorite.

Make sure you’re keeping an eye on the consistency of the smoothie if you want the texture to be a certain way. Once you’ve made this recipe a few times, it becomes so easy to repeat.
