Today I’m going to be sharing a strawberry smoothie recipe with you guys that has very quickly become one of my go-to drinks to make. It takes the great flavor of strawberries and adds in a few other deliciously spicy ingredients to make one incredibly good smoothie that can effortlessly fulfill many roles. It’s fantastic for detoxing, it’s an unbelievably good pre-workout drink, or it can even just be enjoyed as a tasty afternoon snack. So what makes it so good? It all comes down to smart ingredient choices. This recipe is made with a great mix of ingredients that includes strawberries, oranges, bananas, beets, cashews, and a couple of great culinary spices.
Rocket Fuel for Your Body
While beets are perhaps most well known for making fresh-pressed juices, they also work phenomenally well as a smoothie ingredient. In fact, this smoothie recipe works so well as a pre-workout drink precisely because of the addition of ½ cup of cooked beets. Not only are beets an excellent source of essential vitamins and minerals, including vitamin C, potassium, manganese, and folate, but they’re also a rich source of nitrates. Once consumed, your body converts these nitrates into nitric oxide, which improves both blood flow and blood pressure. Studies have shown that beetroot juice is incredibly effective when it comes to improving high intensity exercise performance. (1)
You’ll be adding one cup of frozen strawberries as well, which helps to add even more essential nutrients and antioxidant properties to the smoothie. Along with all of the great nutritional value offered by the strawberries, you’ll also be bolstering the vitamin C content of the smoothie by adding a single large orange. Everyone knows how important vitamin C is for giving your immune system a boost, but few people realize that it’s also a potent antioxidant in its own right. Also known as ascorbic acid, vitamin C is perhaps beneficial for protecting against environmental oxidative stress according to one study. (2)
Strawberries and an orange aren’t the only fruits that you’ll be adding into the smoothie though. You’ll also be throwing a small frozen and slice banana. If you’ve tried some the other smoothie recipes that we’ve recently shared, then you already know how much I love to combine strawberries and bananas in smoothies. The same idea very much applies to this recipe with the banana offering even more dietary fiber, vitamins, and minerals like potassium.
Speaking of dietary fiber, this recipe also calls for ¼ cup of cashews to be added. Along with almonds, cashews are one of my favorite nuts to eat because they’re rich in heart healthy fats that have been proven to help reduce your risk of cardiovascular disease by improving both cholesterol and blood pressure levels. Rounding out the recipe is the addition of two great culinary spices: ginger and turmeric. Both of these ingredients mesh perfectly with the beets give the smoothie a distinctive slightly spicy taste. More importantly, they’re both great ingredients when it comes to providing potent anti-inflammatory benefits. Modern research has established a definite link between chronic inflammation and the development of nearly all types of major diseases (4), making it essential to do everything you can to keep inflammation in your body to a minimum.
After adding all of the above ingredients into a blender, mix in one cup of water and ½ to one cup of ice before blending. You can also optionally add your choice of sweetener to help offset the spiciness of the smoothie if you’d like. Some good options for that includes one or two dates, some honey, or even an all-natural granulated sweetener like Stevia.

1 cup water
1 large orange, peeled and chopped
½ cup cooked and chopped beets
1 cup frozen strawberries
½ small ripe banana, sliced and frozen
¼ tsp turmeric
¼ tsp ground ginger
¼ cup cashews
½ to 1 cup ice
- Place all the ingredients in a blender and blend until smooth.
- Serve immediately.
Feel free to add sweetener of your choice to taste, if necessary.
