Everything You Need to Stay Healthy

The first step in making any smoothie great for supporting your weight loss goals is to make sure that it’s both nutrient-dense and satiating enough that you won’t be hungry for a while after drinking it. To that end, this recipe uses ½ cup of milk along with some ice and plain Greek yogurt as a base. The pairing of milk and Greek yogurt both provide a good mix of protein and saturated fat for your smoothie that ensures it’s nice and satisfying. In addition, the yogurt is also one of the best sources of probiotics that help to keep your gut flora properly balanced. It’s absolutely essential to make sure that your gut health is in tip top shape as the gut’s role in your overall health is wide-reaching. It can have an effect on everything from your mental health to your nervous system. (1)

In order to make this smoothie even more satiating, you’ll be adding a single frozen banana into the mix as well. Along with a few essential vitamins and minerals like vitamin B and potassium, the banana provides a solid amount of dietary fiber that helps to keep you feeling full for longer. Along with the banana, you’ll also be adding one cup of my favorite fruit–frozen strawberries. Not only does this give your smoothie an amazingly yummy flavor, but they’re the first great source of antioxidants that you’ll be adding in. Strawberry phenolics have demonstrated an ability to fight off the damage caused by harmful free radicals and even repair already existing DNA damage. (2)

To further bolster the antioxidant content of this recipe, you’ll be adding two incredibly popular ingredients that are well known to be antioxidant powerhouses. First up is two teaspoons of chia seeds which in addition to being an excellent antioxidant source also provide even more fiber and heart healthy omega-3 fatty acids for this recipe. (3) Along with the chia seeds, you’ll also be using a single tablespoon of Goji berries (or if you can’t find them, Goji berry powder is an acceptable alternative). Goji berries contains several potent antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties that help to really push this smoothie into superfood territory.

Rounding out the antioxidant rich ingredients in this recipe, you’ll need to add a bit of unsweetened cacao powder in order to give the smoothie its chocolate flavor. Both cocoa and cacao contain methylxanthine compounds that provide numerous health benefits such as improved blood pressure and increased insulin sensitivity. (4) The only downside is that unsweetened cacao can definitely taste slightly bitter, so to counteract that you’ll also add one or two fresh dates and some vanilla extract for added flavoring. After adding everything into the blender, go ahead and blend until smooth and enjoy.
