Today I’m going to be sharing a breakfast smoothie recipe that I’ve been making at least a few times per week lately because of how good it is. Not only is this apple breakfast smoothie a highly nutritious way to kickstart your day, but thanks to a great combination of ingredients used, it’s also great for promoting healthy digestion. The majority of the ingredients used in this recipe have proven benefits when it comes to gut health that all come together perfectly to make one great tasting smoothie. Whether you’re drinking it to improve your digestion or just as a healthy way to squeeze breakfast in during those busy mornings, I’m sure you’re going to love this yummy smoothie.

A Smoothie That Provides Mornings Free From Indigestion

The first thing that you’ll be using to start off this apple breakfast smoothie is — unsurprisingly — a medium apple that has been cored and chopped. It gets this recipe off to a great start by adding a solid amount of vitamin C and fiber into the mix. After the apple, the next thing you’ll want to add is ½ cup of frozen pineapple chunks. As with the apple, adding pineapple into the smoothie offers an excellent amount of vitamin C and fiber. More importantly though, pineapple contains an enzyme known as bromelain which offers some fantastic health benefits. Bromelain greatly assists with digesting protein along with helping to reduce inflammation within the body. (1)

Continuing on with the gut health benefits, you’ll be using ½ cup of plain kefir and ½ cup of plain Greek yogurt. Both of these ingredients add an abundance of probiotics to the smoothie recipe. The Greek yogurt has the added benefit of providing a solid amount of protein as well. Probiotics provide a wide range of great health benefits, some of which include boosting the immune system, helping to prevent bowel diseases, and treating diarrhea. (2) Adding more probiotics into the diet is one of the first steps that many people should take when addressing any gut issues they may be facing.

You will also be using three other ingredients that all provide their own unique digestion benefits to this recipe — ginger, fresh mint, and fennel bulb. Ginger is known to relieve gas, heartburn, and nausea symptoms. (3) Fresh mint leaves have been used for thousands of years thanks to their digestive benefits, as they are capable of treating an upset stomach and symptoms of indigestion. (4) And finally fennel bulb is commonly used in tea format to help reduce stomach cramping as well as helping to relax the stomach muscles, which helps to ease the digestion process. (5)

The recipe also calls for the use of two different types of seeds — chia seeds and hemp seeds. Both ingredients are great options to use in this breakfast smoothie as between the two of them they add a solid mix of additional fiber, protein, and healthy omega-3 fatty acids. In order to finish off the smoothie, you simply need to add a few last finishing touches — a bit of honey, lemon juice, and ice. The lemon juice and honey both offer some small digestive benefits as well, but they’re mainly used here for added flavoring to go along with the rest of the ingredients.
