Blueberry Detox Smoothie to Heal Your Toxic Gut

By Emma

There’s certainly no shortage of fad detox diets or programs available in today’s day and age. Even a simple Google search for the term ‘detox’ is enough to throw somebody’s head for quite a spin. Thankfully, if you look past all the fancy protocols promising near instantaneous results, you can still find a rather simple, effective, and delicious way to detox your body that actually works — healthy smoothies. The reason that detox smoothies work is simple. They’re full of nutrient-dense ingredients that help to nourish your cells with vitamins and minerals while assisting your liver with flushing out toxins. This blueberry detox smoothie is made with a terrific mixture of healthy greens, frozen blueberries, and other great ingredients that all work together to give your gut health a super boost.

An All-Natural Detox That Works

It should come as no surprise to anyone that when making a healthy detox smoothie some of the first additions you’ll be using are healthy green veggies. For this particular recipe those greens will come in the form of ¼ cup of frozen spinach (or a single cup of fresh spinach) and one chopped celery stalk. Both of these veggie options are packed to the brim with vitamins, minerals, and disease-fighting antioxidants that help to supercharge your health. Absolutely everyone should be eating at least one (preferably more!) type of leafy green vegetable such as spinach or kale on a daily basis, as research has shown that it can lower your risk of developing cardiovascular disease. In addition to the greens, you’ll also be throwing in ½ of one cooked beet that has been peeled and chopped. I was never really big on adding beets into my smoothies before but that has definitely changed big time since I’ve started experimenting a bit more with them. Now they’re one of my favorite smoothie ingredients! Beets have numerous fantastic health benefits that include providing anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties that help to support your liver with its natural detoxification process. (2)

The antioxidant benefits of this detox smoothie don’t end there though. On top of the above three ingredients, you’ll of course be adding in ½ cup of frozen blueberries. By now everyone out there knows what a great source of antioxidants blueberries (and pretty much every other type of berry) are. They’re an incredibly yummy fruit to enjoy as well — the fact that they help to ward off diseases like cancer and heart disease is just a fantastic bonus to add on top. (3)

You’ll also be adding in two great sources of healthy fats when making this smoothie recipe in the form of ¼ cup of a chopped avocado and two tablespoons of hemp seeds. Each of these ingredients adds an abundance of heart healthy fats, dietary fiber, and other essential nutrients to this detox smoothie. And finally to finish off the recipe you’ll simply need to mix in a bit of ice and one cup of unsweetened coconut water (which is absolutely incredible for replenishing electrolytes and keeping hydrated during the hot summer months).
