Super Healthy & Super Yummy

The great thing about this smoothie recipe is the fact that it’s pretty much the exact definition of “delicious and nutritious”. The first great addition to this recipe is ½ cup of acidophilus yogurt. If you’ve never heard of this type of yogurt, it’s an excellent source of the probiotic Lactobacillus acidophilus, which is probably the most common type of probiotic. It provides quite a few fantastic health benefits for your gut, such as giving your immune system a boost, treating diarrhea, reducing pathogen overgrowth in the digestive tract, and it may also help to treat certain respiratory ailments. The use of ingredients like apples, bananas, rolled oats, ground ginger, and cinnamon almost give this smoothie recipe a hint of an apple crisp like flavor. Not only does this mix of whole food ingredients make this one tasty smoothie to enjoy, but they all offer an abundance of potent antioxidant and anti-inflammatory benefits as well. In fact, each one of these ingredients is quite well known to be packed with disease-fighting antioxidant activity. Harmful free radicals and oxidative stress are two of the contributing factors in the development of many types of chronic diseases, and antioxidants are one of your body’s first line of defense against the damage caused by them. Rounding out the impressive list of health benefits offered by this apple smoothie is the fact that rolled oats are also potentially useful in helping to prevent cardiovascular disease. Daily consumption of oats has been shown to lower both total and the bad kind of LDL cholesterol levels, helping to lower your risk of heart disease. (4)

On top of all of the above mentioned ingredients, you’ll also add ½ cup of milk for the liquid base which helps to bolster the protein and fat content, making the smoothie nice and satisfying. For additional flavor and sweetening, a bit of vanilla extract and one or two fresh dates are added as well.
