Simple Strawberry Banana Paleo Smoothie – Dairy-Free Deliciousness

By Emma

I don’t follow paleo guidelines one hundred percent, but I am familiar with them so I thought I’d share this recipe with you in case you do. Paleo guidelines involve a mix of different types of proteins, fruits and vegetables, and healthy fat sources. No artificial ingredients are used, which I find challenging at times because I’ve gotten so used to fast food restaurants and convenience foods. With smoothies though, I’ve been able to shift away from that style of eating and really focused of nutritious whole foods, and it’s made all the difference in my energy levels, weight and even my skin.

Before we go on with the recipe, it’s worth mentioning that I use this Vitamix for 90% of my recipes just because I like to make large batches for me and my family. If you just make 1-2 servings, feel free to use smaller blenders. For the most part, it doesn’t really matter what brand of blender you use. As long as it can blend through ice and frozen fruit, you’re good to go.

For this recipe, you’ll need some frozen strawberries, frozen blueberries, and a small ripe banana. You don’t need much fruit since this is just a single serve recipe. Berries are high in antioxidants, which is why I almost always add strawberries or blueberries to my smoothies. Bananas on the other hand, are also healthy, and contain fructose and glucose. These two sugars are great for satiety and energy. To sweeten, we have a tablespoon of honey. If you can get your hands on raw, unfiltered honey, even better. Unprocessed honey contains antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, and antiseptic properties, so it has many uses.

Flaxseed meal is just another name for ground flaxseeds. We’re not using whole flaxseeds because those just pass through you without being absorbed by the body. (1) By grounding it, you get all the nutrients in it through digestion, which is what we want. To tie it all together, we have just 1 cup of unsweetened almond milk. You could also use the sweetened variety if you prefer. It won’t make much of a difference to the recipe.

Once you’ve prepared and combined all the ingredients, all that’s left to do is blend, blend blend. Make sure to pulse through any chunks to make sure your smoothie is, well, smooth. Enjoy!
