Super Spinach Detox Smoothie – Antioxidant and Vitamin-Rich Recipe
Every single day, we’re exposed to different forms of pollution with air and water pollution being the two biggest ones. Smog, fumes and gases emitted from vehicles, factories, and burning certain materials fill the air and as a result, we breathe the pollution without even realizing it. Additionally, unless you only drink alkaline or distilled water, there’s always a chance that your tap water may contain small amounts of impurities, bacteria and chemicals that leaked into the water.
If that wasn’t bad enough to hear, do you ever stop and think about the type of food you’re eating? Foods that are highly processed are usually filled with preservatives and artificial ingredients that may negatively impact our health in different ways. When an excessive amount of toxins is built up in our bodies, we may feel one or a few of these symptoms: gastrointestinal problems, skin ailments, inflammation, brain fog or mood swings. If you or someone you know experiences one or many of these symptoms, it’s time for a detox.
Detoxing With Natural Whole Foods
What is a detox? The goal of a detox is to simply rid the body of accumulated toxins. It includes removing impurities from the blood, liver, kidneys, lungs, intestines, and other vital organs. (1) There are many ways an individual can detox but experts agree that one of the less extreme detox methods is to cut out processed/refined foods and consume high amounts of fruits, vegetables, herbs, roots and seeds. This tasty super spinach detox smoothie is packed with antioxidants and vitamin-rich ingredients to help speed up the detox process.
Ginger is a staple ingredient in various detox diet foods and drinks because of it’s incredible detox effects. One effect is its ability to block bacteria from infecting the body due to it’s antifungal properties. This helps to prevent conditions such as urinary tract infection (UTI) and even bronchitis.
This detox recipe also includes fruits that are loaded with nutrients, phytonutrients, vitamins and minerals. Not to mention they taste great! The fruits in this smoothie is a banana, an orange and some lemon juice. The banana gives your smoothie a sweet, creamy taste while the orange and lemon juice add a refreshing citrus flavor with a tangy twist.
As for the vegetables, this recipe uses two kinds; carrots and spinach. Beta-carotene, a pigment found in carrots has been shown to have strong antioxidant effects and protects the skin for irritation or other skin ailments. Spinach on the other hand is great at boosting metabolism which is beneficial in flushing out unwanted toxins. The earthy flavor of the carrots will help balance the tangy flavor of the orange and lemon while the sweetness of the ripe banana helps to mask the bland flavor of the spinach.
If you want to make this recipe in as little as 5 minutes, it’s important to prepare your ingredients beforehand. This means peeling and chopping a large orange, carrots, parsley, and the banana. In a blender, add 1 cup of water, ½ of the ripe banana, ½ of the large orange, ½ cup of frozen spinach or 2 cups of fresh spinach, ½ cup of chopped carrots, 1 teaspoon of grated fresh ginger, 1 tablespoon of chopped parsley, 1 teaspoon of lemon juice, 1 tablespoon of ground flaxseed, and ½ to 1 cup of ice. Blend all the ingredients until you have a smooth mixture. If you would like, you may also add a teaspoon of any sweetener if the smoothie is too bland.
